Osteopathy for babies: when is it worth coming?

Colic, torticollis, difficult sleep: when an osteopathy session can help your baby — and when it is not the answer.

Birth is a mechanically intense passage. The forces applied to a baby's skull, pelvis and spine can leave tension that shows up in the following weeks.

The most common reasons

  • Digestive trouble: colic, significant reflux, constipation.
  • Positional torticollis: your baby always turns their head the same way.
  • Plagiocephaly: flattening on one side of the skull.
  • Sucking difficulties: painful feeding, an uneven latch.
  • Restless sleep, unexplained crying, agitation at the end of the day.

How the session goes

It starts with a conversation with you: how the pregnancy and birth went, birth weight, sleep, feeding. Then a very gentle examination, with your baby usually in your arms or on the table beside you.

Techniques used with babies are exclusively gentle — light pressure, slow movement. No abrupt joint manipulation is ever performed.

Breastfeeding: a complementary support

Trained as a breastfeeding facilitator, I can also look at feeding position and at the tension getting in the way of sucking, alongside the care of your midwife or lactation consultant.

When to see a doctor first

Osteopathy never replaces paediatric care. See a doctor as a priority for fever, weight loss, projectile vomiting, inconsolable and unusual crying, or any sudden change in behaviour.

From what age?

From the first days of life. A first check-up in the weeks after birth often keeps tension from settling in for the long term.
